The Torah is Hashem’s communication to the world – His will and His wisdom. The Talmud embodies the delving into the Torah and understanding the will of Hashem as expressed in the mitzvos, with all the implications and nuances.

Further, Torah is the inheritance of the entire Jewish people – men, women and children. If one actively enters into an agreement to support the learning of the scholars, the Halacha states: It is considered as if the one supporting the learning learned all that Torah himself. (Shulchan Aruch: Yoreh De’ah #246 on the Yissachar-Zevulun Pact.)

Impact beyond the grave

Harav Chaim, the beloved talmid of the Vilna Gaon and the legendary Rosh Yeshiva of Volozhin had a Yissachar-Zevulun agreement with a local shoemaker. The man was totally unlearned but, at the same time, dearly valued Torah learning. The shoemaker made a signed and sealed Yissachar-Zevulun agreement with Rav Chaim, whereby the shoemaker would support Rav Chaim and defray his living costs. At the same time, he would have a full and bona fide stake in Rav Chaim’s learning – the mitzvah and the knowledge through to the World to Come.

One day the shoemaker passed away suddenly. During the shiva period, Rav Chaim faced a perplexing halachic question and researched high and low for a solution. That night the shoemaker appeared to him in a dream and gave him the full solution that he sought. Rav Chaim was amazed and commented, “So quickly, so quickly has he acquired the zchus and knowledge of the Torah that had been studied!”
